Born in 1939 in New York of Russian immigrant parents Ralph Lauren’s entry into the fashion industry began when he worked for Brooks Brothers, the oldest men's clothier chain in the United States. In 1967 he joined Beau Brummell Neckwear, where he created wide, hand-made, expensive neckties. So successful were his designs that a year later he started his own tie company. Soon he turned his fashion flair into designing mens and womenswear collections with huge success – transforming his humble tie company into the billion-dollar business it is today.
